Third Grade Good Eggs

 

IT'S SPRINGTIME!
Six fertile chicken eggs (courtesy Harvey Schlomach, Redeemer member) are nestled quite nicely 'neath our Mama Chicken in the Rainbow Room.  They should hatch over spring break.

Fortunately Mrs. Faidley brought baby chickens for us to love on.  We blew out eggs for our Easter ornaments. We know that these eggs, from the grocery store, come from egg factories.  No roosters there. And everybody knows that it takes a mommy and a daddy to create a baby in God's World.

Many students have chickens in  their backyards, thanks to Austin's backyard coop movement.

Third Grade Paper Making

Each year the third graders make paper for a (surprise) Christmas gift for their parents. This is a great team project; students mastering the complicated steps of paper production, students helping other students and recognizing their own potential for leadership and support of others.

Besides, it's lots of fun!

Here's a SHOUT OUT to Doug Hamm, Jenna's father and Rainbow Room volunteer.  Weekly, he arrives with an "and what are we doing today, Mrs. K?"

and a total willingness to try new things with us.

 

3rd Grade Harvest Time

 

 Wednesday afternoon was cool and clear, just perfect for harvesting basil for Meals On Wheels.  We set a table in the Outdoor Classroom and learned how to pluck the leaves from the bottom of the stem to the top in order not to bruise the leaf tissue.

In the Rainbow Room, Mrs. Marcela Faidley, volunteer parent extraordinaire, supervised 2 apple peeling stations while Mrs. Jahnke dished out the remaining hummus from the 5th grade's nutrition taste-test and took photos.

The third grade meets between 1:15 and 2:45.  Check your calendar to see if you can schedule time to help us with our projects.  After Thanksgiving, we begin to make paper.  All hands on deck!  Contact me at dkeyburn@redeemer.net.

 

 



Third Grade Cocos Island Ecosystem

Environment, ecosystem, population, community, habitat; important concepts that can be confusing to understand and use properly.  Third graders attentively engaged in an assortment of video, interactive and hands-on activities to help us wield these large concepts through a discussion of the interaction of various living organisms in the marine environment off the coast of Cocos Island, CR.

Here's a photo of us constructing the topography and interactive populations (let's call it 'ecosystem') of the marine life off the coast of Cocos Island. 

 

Our work draws us very close to the life a world away from our classroom.

Third Grade Butterfly Release

 

Right before setting up for Harvest Fest last Friday, three children tagged a reared Monarch for MonarchWatch and released it.  The Monarchs will be arriving soon from the northern states on their way to Mexico, so watch for more activity soon!
